Pool Pipe Antifreeze - Non-Toxic Propylene Glycol

Non-toxic propylene glycol pipe antifreeze for swimming pool plant rooms. Prevents pump, heater and pipework cracking through winter freeze. Pre-mixed for direct pour.

When you need it

How to use

  1. Fully drain pool pipework, pumps and filter at close-down.
  2. Pour antifreeze directly into each pipe section to fill.
  3. Cap each pipe end with a winterising plug to retain liquid.
  4. Drain pump body and filter sump; pour antifreeze to fill chambers.
  5. Drain heater according to manufacturer instructions.
  6. Spring opening: drain antifreeze fully and rinse pipework before re-pressurising.

Dosing guide

Pour antifreeze directly into each drained pipe section. Estimate 1 L per 5 m of 50 mm pipework or 1 L per 3 m of 63 mm pipework.

How it works

Pre-mixed propylene glycol antifreeze at 50% concentration in deionised water, with corrosion inhibitor for plumbing materials.

Propylene glycol depresses the freezing point of water to approximately -25 C at 50% concentration. The corrosion inhibitor prevents oxidation of brass, copper and aluminium fittings during dormant winter exposure.

Frozen water in pool pipework expands and cracks pipes, pumps and heater elements. A single hard freeze without antifreeze can cost thousands in spring repairs. Antifreeze is the cheap insurance against that risk.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need?

5-10 L for a typical domestic plant room. Estimate 1 L per 5 m of 50 mm pipework.

Pour into pool or pipes?

Pipes only. Never pour into pool water.

Down to what temperature?

Approximately -25 C at 50% concentration. Sufficient for UK and most of Europe.

Pack sizes?

5 L and 25 L drums.

Pre-mixed or concentrate?

Pre-mixed at 50%. No dilution needed; pour directly.

Do I need this if I have winteriser?

Yes. Winteriser is for water chemistry; antifreeze is for pipework. Different jobs.

What is the active ingredient?

Propylene glycol at 50% in deionised water with corrosion inhibitor.

Why propylene not ethylene?

Propylene glycol is non-toxic and food-grade; ethylene is toxic. Pool antifreeze must be propylene.

Will it damage rubber seals?

No. Propylene glycol is compatible with EPDM, NBR and silicone seals used in pool plumbing.

Foam at spring opening?

Drain pipework fully; rinse with fresh water; check pump body.

Antifreeze ran out over winter?

Top up next year; check pipe end caps.

Antifreeze vs draining pipework dry?

Dry pipework still holds residual water in low spots and U-bends. Antifreeze covers what drainage misses.

Pool antifreeze vs car antifreeze?

Pool grade is propylene glycol (non-toxic); car grade is usually ethylene glycol (toxic). Never substitute car for pool.
